Blunderbusses

Author: D. R. Baxter
Average review score:

Not many books on Blunderbusses
There are a few books on the market which deal with blunderbusses like "Borders Away", but none specifically about American and British Blunderbusses. I was happy to get a copy of this book, because the topic is so limited. It is a small book in size and number of pages, but jammed with photos of different types of blunderbusses which makes it worth the purchase for me. Until someone does a big book on this topic, I would have to rate this excellent.

The Book of Light Sauces & Salad Dressings
Published in Paperback by H.P. Books (December, 1994)
Authors: Anne Sheasby and Steve Baxter
Average review score:

Beautiful photos, not very light recipes.
This is one of those tall and not too wide reference books. I have another one that I like to look at but have seldom cooked out of. This is supposed to be a book of "light" sauces and dressings - but you'd never know from the nutritional analysis. I felt that most of the recipes were not of the light variety. Although they looked good, I wouldn't be using them. I returned my copy of this book. If you are more of a food voyeur than a cook, this would be a great book to have. I am much happier with the copy of The Complete Book of Dressings (by Paulette Mitchell) that I also ordered, kept and reviewed.

Chilton Book Company Repair Manual Chrysler Front Wheel Drive 1981-88

Chilton's Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth manual -- mighty handy!
If you have an older car (like me), something inevitably fails or needs to be replaced. This manual has step-by-step instructions for repairs and service, showing in detail how to get to each part and do what needs to be done.

It has procedures ranging from minimal to major. It's an invaluable tool to have around and a great addition to your other car repair tools. I used mine several times and keep it in the car for the next time it's needed.

Great for Boys or Tomboys!
This book is listed for kids age 4 and up, but my son, who just turned 2, just LOVES it! It has pop-up construction vehicles (bulldozer, forklift, etc.), and some have moving parts! Now, when we go to Home Depot, he can't wait to watch the forklifts...

Fire Came by

Not bad...vague, but thought-provoking.
Seeing as how the authors had to scour Soviet-era records and sift through eyewitness accounts from newspapers of the time, they managed to get just enough information together to make a reader ask questions--and maybe get a goosebump or two.
In 1908 (not 1909...'Ghostbusters' was sooooo wrong!), a meteor was spotted flying over the Tunguska region of Siberia. The locals saw it, watched it come down, felt the sonic booms of its passage . . . then watched it change its course one hundred-eighty degrees in mid-flight. The object then exploded, causing damage to the landscape and injuries to people that would not be seen, explained, or understood until the Hiroshima and Nagasaki blasts nearly forty years later. The heat and concussion from the blast were felt well over sixty miles away.
What happened? What was it? Nobody knows for sure, but with the tantalizing tidbits found herein, you'll have your own ideas. The authors don't say definitely what it was, but they have their opinions, which they offer alongside others they've encountered along the way, from Russian geologists and meteorologists to conspiracy-theorists.
Feel like having your beliefs tweaked or your confident views on alien life shaken up? Pick this one up.

Glen Baxter, His Life: The Years of Struggle
Published in Hardcover by Random House (February, 1984)
Author: Glen Baxter
Average review score:

wonderfully weird humor
I'm not sure how firm a basis this book has in the actual reality of Glen Baxter's life, but it's fun and interesting to read. He does his usual combination of pictures and writing, but this time there's an actual story running through the entire book. He talks about his birth, school, neighbors, relatives, vacations, and more. A few of the pictures are in color, in the same style of coloring you can find in _The Further Blurtings of Baxter_. One of my biggest problems with this book, and the reason why I didn't give it a 5, was the way the text and images were handled. Often, the text pertaining to a particular picture would be found on one page and you'd have to turn the page to see the actual picture. This delay between reading the words and seeing the image took away some of the humor. It was also a bit confusing at first, since I kept thinking that the text on the right was referring to the image on the left. That seems logical, but that's not always how this book was set up.

Great Expectations

A Wonderful Tale For Anytime Like Any Of Dicken's Stories
In this tale we follow a young child named Pip who starts of as an orphaned child living with his big sister(like 10+ years or older big) and her blacksmith husband (Uncle Joe) who has no future other than staying in her working class. That all changes with new found riches thanks to an unknown source. Along with those riches Pip is to be trained into a Gentleman and from that we follow Pip's successes and failures in life dealing with those riches and how he got them. And finally we see him ending with the only thing he could not capture, that has lost its beauty when Pip first saw him/her/it (keeping it a secret, you gotta read to find out) during his childhood. Telling anymore would ruin the purpouse and joy of reading this book. Simply put, Dickens adds the sense of adventure and humor to his book and twist and turns that keep it always suspensful and parts in every stage of Pip's life we could all relate to. And with those characteristics marvelously arranged this a very enjoyable tale to read from beginning to end. The only problem I have with it is that the literature here is sometiems a bit hard to understand since after all this was written over 100 years ago.

Greatest Mountain : Katahdin's Wilderness
Published in Paperback by Down East Books (01 January, 1980)
Authors: Percival P. Baxter, Judith Hakola, and John Hakola
Average review score:

A tribute to Mount Katahdin and Baxter State Park.
Connie Baxter Marlow has put together a tribute to Mount Katahdin and Baxter State Park. The people of Maine have a right to be proud of their mountain. This is not a trail guide to the mountain but rather a presentation of its flora and fauna. The photography is very good. However, the text tends to the mystical. This is not a total surprise. Mountains like Katahdin that stand by themselves tend to be regarded differently from those that are found in mountainous regions. For example, Mt. Shasta which looms over Northern California, just as Katahdin looms over the center of Maine, is the subject of legends about lost civilizations. However, this book is worthwhile for its photographs.

Her Perfect Man (Desire, 1328)

:)
Bryce Burnette is a preacher that has a passion for what he does. Katherine Mays is the town party girl. Bryce and Katherine feel an instant attraction toward each other, but Katherine is unwilling to act on their attraction. Bryce, on the other hand, is not a man to give up and Katherine is not a woman whom he wants to give up.

Katherine has had a bad experience with a preacher in the past and feels that she cannot trust Bryce. Katherine is also aware that because of her reputation and her business that the members of Bryce's church would not like seeing her and Bryce together. With all of the obstacles in their way avoiding each other is still difficult for Bryce and Katherine.

This was an enjoyable short story, but I wish that it did not end so abruptly. I would have enjoyed having another chapter to see how things turn out for Bryce and Katherine.

I Believe Because
Published in Paperback by Baker Book House (June, 1976)
Author: Batsell B. Baxter
Average review score:

A scientific approach to bible truth
He uses a lot of qoutes and ideas to support the bible. Simple enough for a layperson to understand but interesting enough to keep the scientist involved. He lays it out in very organized fashion with very many bible references to check his accuracy. A nice book to get an introduction into supporting chistianity from nonbeliever's attacks.
